Dynamic stress prediction for a Pump-Turbine in Low-Load Conditions: Experimental validation and phenomenological analysis

To meet the increasing demand for higher flexibility in hydropower, an operating range extension in an existing hydroelectric powerplant is considered. To this end, the dynamic flow and structural behavior of the low-head pump-turbine is investigated in turbine mode in partial load and deep partial load conditions, to evaluate the feasibility of this flexibilization due to the increased high cycle fatigue damage. In a first step, different numerical simulation approaches that combine fluid dynamics and structural dynamics are applied and compared to in-situ dynamic strain and pressure measurements on the impeller. As a result, the modelling requirements for a numerical workflow that leads to unmatched accuracy in predicting the broad-band dynamic stresses of deep partial load are identified. In a second step, the operating-point-dependent fatigue crack initiation spots are identified based on dynamic stresses. Herein, the emergence of an additional dominant critical spot near the blade leading edge is observed, which is unexpected for low-head pump turbines. Thanks to the detailed numerical flow and structural analyses, the root cause for the dynamic stress concentration is studied and the emergence of the new critical spot is understood. It turns out in deep partial load, that the main source of pressure oscillations on the impeller blade surfaces is the vortex-dominated flow detachment zone around the blade leading edge, which, in combination with the geometry of the investigated impeller, translates into the main stress oscillations. The results of this work were later used to extend the operating range of the hydroelectric powerplant from initially 25% to 100% power output to now 0% to 100%.

Computationally Efficient and Interface Accurate Dual-Grid Phase-Field Simulation of Turbulent Drop-Laden Flows

Abstract In this work, we develop a dual-grid approach for the direct numerical simulations (DNS) of tur- bulent multiphase flows in the framework of the phase-field method (PFM). With the dual-grid approach, the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations (flow-field) and of the Cahn-Hilliard equa- tion (phase-field) are performed on two different computational grids. In particular, a base grid - fine enough to resolve the flow down to the Kolmogorov scale - is used for the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, while a refined grid - required to improve the description of small interfacial structures - is used for the solution of the Cahn-Hilliard equation (phase-field method). The proposed approach is validated, and its computational efficiency is evaluated considering the deformation of a drop in a two-dimensional shear flow. Analyzing the computational time and memory usage, we observe a reduction between ≃30% and ≃40% (with respect to the single-grid approach), depending on the grid refinement factor employed for the phase-field variable. The applicability of the approach to a realistic three-dimensional case is also discussed, by focusing on the breakage of a thin liquid sheet inside a turbulent channel flow. Indications on the grid resolution representing a good compromise between accuracy and computational efficiency in drop-laden turbulence are also provided.

Numerical simulation of electric field-induced phase transition evolution and boiling characteristics in the evaporative cooling medium C6F12O

Phase change cooling technology offers high cooling efficiency, safety, and reliability, representing a novel approach to achieving efficient heat dissipation for high-power and large-capacity electrical equipment. The formulation of the cooling medium is pivotal to phase change cooling technology. However, current media exhibit compatibility, stability, economy, and environmental friendliness deficiencies. Consideration could be given to implementing the C6F12O medium due to its superior overall performance and ability to meet the latent heat requirements in phase change cooling equipment. This paper employs a numerical simulation approach that combines the phase field method based on the Cahn-Hilliard equation with the theory of electrohydrodynamics. It investigates the impact of temperature, electric field intensity, and electric field direction on the evolution of bubble motion and the boiling state of the C6F12O medium, considering the interaction of electric-fluid-heat-phase fields. Numerical results indicate that the system undergoes initial nucleate boiling, nucleate boiling, and film boiling stages at T = 330–335 K, T = 335–350 K, and T ⩾ 355 K, respectively. The introduction of an appropriate electric field can enhance the motion evolution of C6F12O bubbles. However, attention must be paid to the formation of bubble channels under high field strength to prevent potential decreases in insulation performance. An inhomogeneous electric field in the vertical direction proves more effective in improving the bubble release rate compared to a uniform electric field. To some extent, an inhomogeneous electric field in the horizontal direction can prevent the mass accumulation of bubbles in regions of high field intensity. This research has the potential to offer theoretical guidance for the engineering application of the C6F12O phase change cooling medium.

Experimental and numerical simulation investigation of the deformation characteristics of vertical boreholes under non-uniform horizontal principal stress

To study borehole deformation under non-uniform horizontal principal stress in the deep strata, a prediction method for horizontal principal stress was developed based on the morphological parameters of boreholes, the deformation trajectory equation for the standard circular borehole was derived based on elasticity theory, and the morphological characteristics of boreholes were analyzed. Additionally, a quantitative relationship between the geometric parameters of elliptical boreholes and horizontal principal stress was established. Subsequently, uniaxial tests on borehole deformation were conducted to verify elliptical deformation under non-uniform horizontal principal stress. A combined deductive, experimental, and numerical simulation approach to borehole deformation analysis was adopted, and the impact factors of borehole deformation were obtained. The results indicated as following: (1) the deformation morphology of borehole under non-uniform horizontal principal stress was elliptical; (2) for the given lithology, the greater the difference in horizontal principal stress, the greater were the ellipticity and elliptical deformation of borehole; (3) for given stress background, rock strength was inversely proportional to ellipticity. Additionally, the smaller the Young’s modulus and compressive strength, the larger was the Poisson’s ratio and the larger was the ellipticity. For example, the ellipticity of mudstone and coal was greater than that of limestone and sandstone; (4) with an increase in load, the displacement of borehole wall exhibited three stages: initial micro-deformation, accelerated deformation, and stable deformation; (5) horizontal principal stress can be calculated by using the morphological parameters (long and short axes) of an elliptical hole. Furthermore, a horizontal principal stress method theory can be developed based on the morphological parameters of boreholes. The results of our study can provide new ideas and methods for the measurement of in situ stress in deep boreholes and a theoretical basis for the development of equipment for measuring elliptical boreholes.

An extensive study on charge transport layers to design and optimization of high-efficiency lead-free Cs2PtI6-based double-perovskite solar cells: A numerical simulation approach

Perovskite materials are getting attention day by day due to their numerous optoelectronic properties. Lead perovskites are well-known for various applications in photovoltaic devices due to their non-toxicity which has no impacts on both the environment and health. Cs2PtI6, a lead-free halide perovskite, is renowned for its broad-spectrum light absorption and remarkably high absorption coefficient. Its stability under ambient conditions surpasses that of numerous other halide perovskites, rendering it exceptionally appealing for photovoltaic applications The device configuration with FTO/ETL/Cs2PtI6/HTL/Au is used in this study where 4 different ETLs and 10 HTLs are used to investigate the best device configuration. The impact of different device parameters like thickness, acceptor density, donor density, and defect density are optimized to attain the best efficient device configuration. SCAPS-1D simulator is used to perform numerical analysis under light intensity of AM 1.5 light spectrum (100 mW/cm2). After the optimization of different device parameters, the device configured with FTO/SnS2/Cs2PtI6/MoTe2/Au shows the best performance among four devices where PCE is 32.98 %, VOC is 1.11 V, JSC is 33.19 mA/cm2, FF is 88.89 %. This suggested Cs2PtI6-based perovskite solar cells demonstrate superior performance compared to numerous lead perovskite-based solar cells, highlighting Cs2PtI6 as a promising alternative for photovoltaic applications while mitigating toxicity concerns.

Numerical simulation approach for consideration of ageing effects in PCB substrates by modifying viscoelastic materials properties

During operating time of electronic systems, the used materials in such devices are potentially subjected to ageing effects, which might limit the lifetime. Therefore, knowledge about the used materials and the way the materials are affected by ageing effects is of key importance to develop reliable products.In this study, a simulation approach is discussed that is able to consider ageing effects caused by oxidation at elevated temperature of a printed circuit board material, typically used for high frequency applications. The material was characterized for its thermomechanical properties with state-of-the-art techniques for different ageing durations. Ageing was accelerated by storing the samples in an oven at 175 °C for up to 1000 h.Within the simulation workflow, the thermomechanical properties of the different aged states are defined by modifying the pristine viscoelastic properties. Four exponential functions are derived modifying the initial modulus, the characteristic time constants, the shift function and the coefficient of thermal expansion, all in dependency of ageing time.To demonstrate the approach, the soldered interconnection lifetime of a theoretical chip-size-package on a printed circuit board is studied. State-of-the-art lifetime predictions of such interconnections only include thermomechanical ageing effects, for example by creep effects of the solder. By additionally considering the ageing of the printed circuit board, thermal ageing is combined with thermomechanical ageing.Results in the soldered interconnection are compared between either considering additional ageing effects of the printed circuit board or neglecting this behavior. Thus it is shown that thermal ageing plays a significant role in the development of accumulated creep strain which becomes increasingly important with increasing expected lifetime.

Research on the Effect of Structural Parameters on Cavitation Performance of Shear Hydrodynamic Cavitation Generator

The method of cavitation is increasingly applied in water environmental protection. Based on the numerical simulation method, a study on the structural parameters of the shear-type hydrodynamic cavitation generators for wastewater treatment is proceeded. The internal flow field is described by employing the mixed multiphase flow model and the Zwart cavitation model. Experiments were conducted by applying the wastewater from a dyeing factory as the medium. The degradation rate of COD in water characterizes the cavitation performance of the hydrodynamic cavitation generator, and the rationality of the numerical simulation approach is validated. The findings indicate that different structural parameters have a great influence on the cavitation performance. The appropriate number of tooth rows creates a flow field with a greater vapor and velocity than the other parameters. The number of teeth in a single row, the outer diameter of the hydrodynamic cavitation generator and the tooth bevel angle also affect the cavitation performance to some extent, and there is an optimal value. The study provides a reference for the applicability of a numerical simulation of the flow field inside the hydrodynamic cavitation generator and the structural optimization of the rotary hydrodynamic cavitation generator.

Dynamic behaviors of eccentrically loaded RC column under lateral low-velocity impact

This study aims to examine the influence of eccentric axial loads on the lateral low-velocity impact behaviors of RC columns. Firstly, the numerical simulation approach is validated by accurately reproducing the impact force, as well as the deflection, axial load and failure mode of columns in pendulum impact and eccentrically loading tests. Secondly, the effects of the axial load ratios and eccentric distances on the dynamic behaviors of RC columns are analyzed as follows: (i) Increasing the axial load ratio and the eccentric distance at the impact direction can reduce the deflection of RC columns when the axial load ratio is relatively low; (ii) the instability failure could occur on columns with large enough axial load and impact energy; (iii) the eccentric distance of axial loads on the fixed-supported RC column can be neglected since the induced boundary rotation is constrained by fixed supports; (iv) for RC columns with pinned-fixed or pinned-pinned supports, the eccentric distance at the impact direction should be considered, while the eccentric distance at the vertical impact direction can be neglected. Furthermore, the dynamic coupled flexural and shear resistance function of eccentrically loaded RC columns are established and validated. A 2DOF model is presented to predict low-velocity impact behaviors of RC columns with varying axial load ratios and eccentric distances. The failure modes transition mechanism induced by the axial load is further revealed. Increasing axial loads can enhance columns’ flexural resistance and tendency of failure mode from flexural to shear/flexure-shear. The P-δ effect is amplified by larger axial loads and deflections, causing the instability failure of columns. Finally, a theoretical impact energy of the critical instability of eccentrically loaded RC columns is proposed to assist the structural impact-resistant design.

Investigation on laminated steel slit shear walls with low yield steel

To improve the energy dissipation capacity of steel slit shear walls made of thin plates and mitigate the adverse effects from the large out-of-plane deformation and potential local buckling failure, a novel laminated steel slit (LSS) shear wall assembled from two single-layer steel slit (SSS) shear walls is proposed in this study. First, the theoretical analysis method for predicting the shear strength and stiffness of the LSS shear walls is proposed. To validate the theoretical method as well as investigate the hysteretic performance of the LSS shear walls, two specimens made from different materials, common carbon steel and low yield steel, are designed and tested experimentally under quasi-static cyclic loading. Refined finite element models are developed to simulate the hysteretic behaviors of the LSS shear walls, which show good agreement with the test results. Further, the performance differences between the LSS shear walls and SSS shear walls are analyzed using the validated numerical simulation approach. The strength and stiffness of the LSS shear walls are greater than the summation of the individual SSS shear walls, attributed to the interaction between the different layers in the LSS shear walls. The energy dissipation efficiency of the LSS shear walls is improved and the stiffness degradation is effectively delayed, thanks to the incorporation of the low yield steel material. Finally, to evaluate the effects of the contributing factors on the seismic performance of the LSS shear walls, a series of parametric analyses are performed. Parametric analysis results show that the use of the low yield steel helps to improve the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the LSS shear walls and delay the stiffness degradation. A large link width ratio, small link length ratio and large link thickness ratio can all contribute to a large strength, stiffness and absolute energy dissipation of the LSS shear walls, but the former two at the same time deteriorate the stiffness degradation.

Numerical simulation of the co-firing of pulverized coal and eucalyptus wood in a 1000MWth opposed wall-fired boiler

Currently, coal-fired coupled biomass power generation is widely regarded as a primary method for reducing carbon emissions in coal-fired power plants. This research investigates the co-firing of biomass in an opposed wall-fired boiler and the implementation of air-staged combustion technology using numerical simulation approaches. The study examines the impact of various air methods of distribution and blending ratios on combustion properties and NOx emissions. The findings demonstrate that the abrasive wear of fuel particles on the platen superheater is decreased by the addition of biomass to the fuel mix. Furthermore, a drop in the furnace chamber's overall temperature is the outcome of raising the blending ratio. Different blending ratios have their own adapted air distribution methods. At blending ratios of 10% and 30%, the W-type air distribution exhibits the lowest NOx outlet concentrations of 231.84 mg/Nm3 and 220.6 mg/Nm3, respectively. Moreover, the W-type air distribution shows the highest burnup rates of 98.74% and 98.43% at these blending ratios. This suggests that it is feasible to change the burner monolayer air distribution and combine it with co-firing of biomass technology to achieve low NOx and efficient operation of a hedge-fired boiler.

On the probable distribution of stock-recruitment resilience of Pacific saury (Cololabis saira) in the Northwest Pacific Ocean

Abstract Determining how resilient a stock-recruitment relationship is to environmental variation is crucial for fisheries management. Steepness is a key factor characterizing the resilience of a fish stock and, hence, for establishing management reference points. This study estimates the distribution of steepness for Pacific saury using a simulation approach based on evolutionary ecology and reproductive biology, and how it changes in response to environmental change. The median estimated steepness is 0.82 (80% probable range 0.59, 0.93) based on the best available biological information, which suggests that Pacific saury can produce a relatively high proportion of unfished recruitment when depleted to 20% of unfished spawning biomass. Elasticity analysis indicates that steepness for Pacific saury is most sensitive to the survival rate of early life stages, mean body weight, growth, and length-at-maturity. Environmental change could substantially impact steepness, with unfavorable conditions related to survival rates, length-at-maturity, mean body weight, and growth potentially leading to a reduction in resilience. Understanding these impacts is crucial for the assessment and management of Pacific saury. Our numerical simulation approach provides an analytical tool applicable for calculating the steepness distribution in other small pelagic fish influenced by increases in sea surface temperature due to global warming.

Energy dissipation and seismic response reduction system for high-speed railway bridges based on multiple performance requirements

The emergence of high-speed railway bridges in regions with high seismic intensity has brought attention to the growing seismic challenges associated with these structures. Although the prevalent use of friction pendulum bearings for seismic isolation in China has proven effective in mitigating the seismic response of bridges, it falls short of meeting the safety standards required for high-speed trains. To address the limitations of existing isolation systems, this study employs a combined approach of numerical simulation and experimental research, leading to the invention of performance-controllable isolation bearing and multi-directional energy dissipation dampers. Mechanical models for both components were introduced, and design methods for their key parameters were established based on multi-level seismic defense requirements. By integrating these advancements, a novel cooperative seismic isolation system for high-speed railway bridges was created. Under the influence of moderate earthquakes, the system relies on the shear key to meet the stiffness requirements for normal service. During large earthquakes, the shear key is sheared off, and the damper provides momentary stiffness to control track deformation, enabling the safe stopping of trains. This combination forms a seismic isolation system during large earthquakes, ensuring the safety of railway bridges. The numerical analysis of a high-speed railway bridge employing a cooperative seismic isolation system demonstrates substantial mitigation in the response of both the pier bottom and pier top. This aligns with seismic requirements for the bridge structure. Additionally, the reduction in train track deformation meets safety standards, confirming the seismic performance of bridges and ensuring the reliability of train operations.

MUST dome design based on dome seeing quantitative evaluation

ABSTRACT The Multiplexed Survey Telescope (MUST) project is led by Tsinghua University, which entrusted the European Industrial Engineering (EIE) GROUP with the design, manufacture, and assembly of the dome. Located on Saishiteng Mountain in Qinghai Province, MUST benefits from exceptional atmospheric seeing conditions etc. Local dome seeing may be comparable to atmospheric seeing and requires careful consideration. This research, based on numerical simulations, focuses on refining the dome structure and temperature regulation strategies to achieve optimal dome seeing. The existing simulations only consider nighttime dome seeing and overlook the impact of daytime dome heating on nighttime conditions. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) part mostly relies on a steady-state k − ε model, which cannot simulate transient processes or capture optical turbulence. In this study, a comprehensive multiphysics field coupling simulation was conducted, encompassing radiation heat transfer, fluid heat transfer, CFD, and ray tracing. Simulations include both daytime and nighttime scenarios, taking into account the daytime heating of the dome due to solar irradiation, as well as dome seeing under natural ventilation at night. The CFD utilizes the large eddy simulation model, enabling three-dimensional transient simulation and the simulation of optical turbulence. Ultimately, the broadening of the point spread function was statistically analysed after a certain integration time, facilitating a quantitative evaluation of dome seeing. This numerical simulation approach is closer to real world conditions, improving simulation accuracy and addressing the shortcomings of existing simulations. Some qualitative conclusions are consistent with practical engineering experience. In the end, the dome seeing was successfully regulated to 0.21 arcsec, meeting the observational requirements.

Kinetics-based wetting properties of microdroplets impacting respirable coal dust particles

The removal of respirable coal dust particles has been the focus of domestic and foreign research, and the spray dust suppression technology has been adopted for the prevention and control process; it is based on the mechanism whereby liquid droplets impact dust particles. To further study the wetting properties of microdroplets impacting respirable coal dust particles based on kinetics, this study focused on the droplet morphology, and mathematical and physical models of a microdroplet impacting a respirable coal dust particle were established to explore the variation laws of the droplet spreading and wetting under central and non-central impacts, for which the CLSVOF numerical simulation approach was adopted. The results showed the occurrence of gas retention at the phase interface, which affected the droplet wetting characteristics on the coal dust surface, after the contact between the liquid and dust particles. The influence of the impact velocity, particle size ratio, contact angle, and offset distance on the droplet spreading behavior was investigated by comparative analysis of 12 working conditions with different parameters. The droplets can completely wrap the coal dust particles under only one working condition parameter (V = 5m/s,Φ = 2,θ = 90°,L = 0 μm). The microdroplets are extremely difficult to wet respirable coal dust particles and the spreading behavior of the final droplet could be divided into three states: static adsorption, complete encapsulation and permanent escape. Our results can help better understand the wetting relationship between microdroplets and respirable coal dust particles, serving as a basis for dust prevention and control.

Mesoscopic mechanical study on quasi-static compression of coral aggregate seawater concrete after high temperature exposure

Coral aggregate seawater concrete (CASC) is a pioneering concrete made by blending and curing coral reefs, coral sands, cement, mineral admixtures, chemical additives, and seawater. The investigation of its mechanical properties is important for both theoretical and engineering purposes. This paper aims to investigate the quasi-static mechanical properties of CASC after exposure to high temperatures using a combined approach of experiments and numerical simulations. The simulation uses LS-DYNA software and a three-dimensional random aggregate mesoscopic model to analyze the process of concrete damage and crack propagation. Various mechanical parameters such as peak stress, peak strain, and compressive strength after exposure to different temperatures are calculated. The simulation results show that under quasi-static uniaxial compressive loading, microcracks initiate within the mortar and interfacial transition zone (ITZ) of CASC. These cracks then propagate through the coarse aggregates, leading to aggregate failure and the disintegration of the concrete structure. The macroscopic damage traits of CASC specimens reveal concentrated damage in the central region. As the temperature increases during heat treatment, the severity of damage to CASC specimens also increases. However, as the strength grade increases, the damage condition of CASC tends to improve.

Research on the Mechanism of Flow-Induced Vibration in the Cooling System of a Double Crystal Monochromator

To investigate the mechanism of flow-induced vibrations in the cooling system of a double crystal monochromator (DCM), this paper utilizes a multi-physics numerical simulation approach, employing ANSYS and FLUENT platforms to simulate the flow state of liquid nitrogen in the cooling system and explore the amplitude response of the DCM. Initially, simulations were conducted to examine the flow state of liquid nitrogen with varying frequency and amplitude pulsations. Subsequently, modal analysis was employed to investigate the amplitude response of the DCM in the pitch direction vibrations under pulsating excitation. Finally, this research investigated the influence of high heat load-induced liquid nitrogen boiling on a DCM. The results indicate that pipe resistance is the fundamental cause of vibration induced by pulsating excitation. Low-frequency excitation enhances the amplification factor of DCM vibration. In contrast, due to the rapid conversion of fluid kinetic energy to pressure potential energy, high-frequency excitation increases the pulsation amplitude in the pipe. Additionally, there is a linear relationship between the amplitude of liquid nitrogen velocity fluctuations and the response amplitude of a DCM. The slug flow formed after liquid nitrogen boiling generates low-frequency pulse signals, and intermittent fluid impacts cause significant vibrations in the DCM. These research findings provide a reference for the analysis and design of ultra-high-stability DCM cooling systems.

A novel systematic approach for robust numerical simulation of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic circular tubes: Utilizing machine-learning techniques for calibration and validation

Developing a reliable and robust finite element model of a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite structure is investigated by using the LS-DYNA solver and Python. This study tries to provide a systematic numerical approach to cover the principal impediment to adaptation of composite energy absorbers, that is the lack of a reliable predictive method. The proposed procedure aims to further the understanding of advanced composite structures’ behavior during the crash phenomenon by developing an accurate finite element model. To do so, the mechanical properties of the material were extracted from American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard test methods, followed by experimental investigation of circular CFRP tubes undergoing quasi-static loading. A numerical simulation framework was then utilized to scrutinize the effectiveness of simulation parameters on the crushing mechanism. Finally, a systematic approach based on machine learning techniques was performed to adjust non-physical modeling parameters for further calibration and validation. In this regard, a versatile Python code was developed to automate pre-processing, processing, and post-processing steps. The code also provides a groundwork to perform machine learning techniques. Interestingly, the numerical and experimental results were highly correlated with a correlation coefficient of almost 90%. Additionally, several non-physical numerical parameters were found to be inactive, while some else were identified as effective parameters, and their corresponding effectiveness was quantitatively extracted and discussed for the first time in the literature.

A finite element-based dynamic simulation method for modeling shield-ground interactions: 3D numerical simulations with comparison to physical experiments

In this paper, a novel numerical simulation approach based on the finite element method for dynamically modeling the excavation process of shield tunneling is proposed, with the shield-ground interactions well captured. This method is capable of mimicking the alternating modes of advancing and stopping of a shield boring machine during underground construction, with the important effects of the cutterhead rotation and slurry support pressure considered. Under the cutting action, the soil at the excavation face would experience irreversible deformation and damage, such that additional support needs to be provided by the cutterhead blades and slurry to maintain stability. The impacts of key construction parameters are examined, including cutterhead rotary speed, advance rate, and slurry support pressure, on shield tunneling operations and ground responses. The numerical model is rigorously validated against physical model experiments. This work provides useful insights into the mechanistic processes in the stratum during shield tunneling, including the spatiotemporal evolution of ground deformation patterns and stress redistributions. The results offer valuable guidance for optimizing shield tunneling operations and enhancing tunneling safety and efficiency.

Performance optimization study of lead-free CsSnGeI3 based perovskite solar cell heterostructure with different inorganic electron transport layers: A numerical simulation approach

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are considered to be one of the most prominent candidates for its commercialization. The meteoric properties of the PSC have always astounded the researchers. Thus, in this perspective, the germanium-based PSCs are able to increase a sense of curiosity among photovoltaic (PV) researchers due to its superior stability and efficiency. In the present work, different combinations of the lead-free and non-toxic inorganic caesium tin-germanium (CsSnGeI3) based PSC structures have been studied using various electron transport layers (ETLs) (SnS2, TiO2, WS2, MoTe2 and ZnSe) and Mg–CuCrO2 as a hole transport layer due to its meteoric properties. For each ETL, the impact of material parameters including the thickness of the various layers, absorber acceptor density, donor density, absorber defect density, absorber radiative recombination and interfacial defect density are examined to study the cell performance (such as Voc, Jsc, FF, and PCE). Moreover, the role of operating temperature, shunt resistance and series resistance in analysing the cell performance has also been checked towards its practical applicability. The results show ZnSe as the best ETL in comparison to other inorganic ETLs for CsSnGeI3 based absorber with Mg–CuCrO2 as an HTL, used in this work resulting in a good cell performance with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 33.24%, Voc ∼ 1.36 V, Jsc ∼ 28.02 mA/cm2 and fill factor (FF) ∼ 86.79%. The proposed simulation work may pave the way for further design and optimization of Sn-based PSCs towards practical applications.

Rayleigh–Bénard Convection With Multiple Solutions in Trapezoidal Closed Cavities

Abstract Rayleigh–Bénard convection (RBC) in symmetric trapezoidal closed cavities with cavity angle ϕ=70°−110°, filled with air, is studied using numerical simulations where inclined side walls are adiabatic. In contrast to rectangular cavities, where no flow exists below a threshold value, there is a weak convection even at a low Rayleigh number (Ra) due to the fact that there is a component of thermal gradient in the horizontal direction in these cavities. Interestingly, these cavities show sudden and significant jumps in the convection, similar to square cavities (Rac = 2585.02 for ϕ=90°), as Ra increases beyond a critical value (Rac). It is noted here that these Rac represent symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcations. These bifurcations are seen in both acute (Rac = 8000 for ϕ=70°) and obtuse (Rac = 2300 for ϕ=110°) angle trapezoidal cavities. Moreover, it is observed that multiple steady-state solutions (MSSS) exist as Ra is further increased. A forward and backward continuation approach for numerical simulations is used to track the co-existence of MSSS. These steady-states have co-existing one-roll and two-roll convective patterns beyond another threshold value of Ra. Here, two types of critical Ra have been identified for different cavity angles; one shows the sudden jump in the convection, and the other is the one beyond which MSSS co-exist. Furthermore, a codimension two bifurcation analysis is carried out with Ra and ϕ as two parameters. The bifurcation analysis divides the parameter space into different regions based on the multiplicity of the solutions.
